One would think that road signs have been around forever. I mean, before Siri, how would you know where you are or where you’re going if it were not for road signs? You may not think too much about our road signs, but they play such a significant role in our safety.

 

Not sure how it would have been back in the day when road signs did not exist. Of course, there were maps but if it weren’t for road signs, it would be extremely difficult to know you were on the correct path.

 

So how did our current road signs come to be? 

 

Would you be surprised to find out that our current road signs were invented in 1965, on January 1st?

 

It is true, although it took some time and some help through the late 50s and 60s, the current road signs we follow today were introduced in '65.

 

In fact, it involved two committees. The Anderson Committee, who developed the motorway signing system and the Worboys Committee, who signed it off for all existing roads.
